Q: What is a charter school?

A: Charter schools are independent public schools that are allowed to be more innovative and held accountable for improved student achievement. Charter schools were created to empower parents with more choices, create new and innovative approaches for schools and opportunities for teachers, and inspire the border school movement.

 

Q: Who can attend Academy of Alameda?

A: Any student between grades TK and 8 living in California is able and welcome to AoA!

 

Q: Are charter schools free to attend?

A: Yes! AoA and all charter schools are tuition-free independent public schools.

 

Q: Is breakfast and lunch free?

A: Yes. Breakfast and lunch are free to all AoA students.

 

Q: What time is breakfast served?

A: Breakfast services begin at 7:45 a.m.

 

Q: What time does school start?

A: School begins at 8:10 a.m. for elementary school students and at 8:30 a.m. for middle school students.

 

Q: Does AoA offer transportation to its students?

A: AoA does not have its own transportation offerings and instead recommends families explore public transportation or carpool options with fellow peers. 

 

Eligible grade 6-8 students in Alameda County can also receive free Student Transit passes through the Alameda Co. Transportation Commission. Review your student's eligibility here!

 

Q: What is social justice education?

A: Social justice education allows AoA students to become socially conscious leaders by focusing on community, advocacy, and multiple perspectives. AoA’s social justice curriculum is inclusive, empowering, and delivered in an age-appropriate manner to each and every student.
