Grade Level Placement by Age
Grade Placement and Age Requirements
At The Academy of Alameda, we follow all California set laws and guidelines placed by the California Department of Education regarding student age and grade placement. Students must meet the age requirements established for their grade level.
Please keep in mind that AoA does not administer academic assessments to determine whether a student can be placed in a higher grade. We must place students in the grade corresponding to their birth date, which is established by the California law (Education Code).
To help determine the appropriate grade level for your student, please review the grade placement chart below.
Specific guidelines for TK, K, and 1st:
- Minimum age requirements for TK: A child who will have their fourth (4th) birthday by September 1st shall be admitted to a transitional kindergarten program maintained by the school district or charter school (EC Section 48000 (C(1)(G)).
Students who turn four (4) after September 1st must wait until the next school year to enroll.
- Minimum age requirements for Kindergarten: A child shall be admitted to a Kindergarten at the beginning of a school year, or at any later time in the same year if the child will have their fifth (5th) birthday on or before September 1st of that school year. (EC Section 48000[a] ; Kindergarten Readiness Bill 1381)
- Minimum age requirements for 1st Grade: A child shall be admitted to the first (1st) grade of an elementary school during the first month of a school year if the child will have their sixth (6th) birthday on or before September 1st of that school year. (EC Section 48010)
