My name is Leah Rubin and my preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new principal of The Academy of Alameda for the 20–21 school year. I am a first generation daughter of immigrants, born in Oakland, and raised in the East Bay. I was the first to graduate from college in my family, receiving a Bachelor’s in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara. I continued my journey as a lifelong learner, and went on to earn my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Master’s in Education from Cal State East Bay. I am now in my 14th year as an educator, spending most of my career as a teacher and leader in Oakland.
I recently graduated from Principal Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley, where I earned my Administrator Services Credential, and a second Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. School should be a place where students feel like they can be their true selves, where their ideas matter, and where students see themselves in what they are learning. As a school leader, I am driven by equity and committed to the well-being of all students I serve. I look forward to upholding the core values set by the current leadership team, and I am also excited to partner with you to co-create a vision for our community’s future.
When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my young children Lucia and Jude, my partner Luc (who is a 5th grade teacher), as well as my very large extended family and friends. On the weekends, you can find me going on hikes with my family, enjoying a delicious cup of coffee, traveling when we can, and caring for my many pets!
As your school leader, it is important to me that all who enter AoA feel welcome and valued. I am thankful to have the opportunity to be apart of this wonderful school community, and I look forward to getting to know you all.
